Volunteer Helps Make Events a Success

October 5, 2022

Woman standing with two dogs in lush greenery settingSince 2016, Laurie Gillis has been an enthusiastic dynamo of a volunteer for Can Do Canines. She says, “I found out about Can Do Canines when I adopted my dog, Barkley, and was looking for somewhere to take him after doing obedience training to see if we could handle ourselves. I heard on the morning news that the Woofaroo was happening that day and came over.” Laurie learned that we train Diabetic Assist Dogs, and that struck a special chord with her; a childhood friend had recently died in her sleep from hypoglycemia. Laurie decided Can Do Canines was a place she’d like to volunteer, and we’re so glad she did!

Laurie joined our Events Planning Committee and has shown real talent in that role. The work entailed with planning our two largest fundraising events, the Can Do Woofaroo and Fetching Ball Gala, can be long and challenging at times, especially as the countdown begins in the weeks prior to the event itself. Laurie has stepped in during those times to help where needed outside of her own assigned role to ensure the success of each event.

Event Coordinator Melissa Herman says, “Laurie is always willing to help where needed, even if it means taking on a difficult or time-consuming task. At the same time, she always makes everything more fun!” In the time between working on our fundraisers, Laurie lends a hand at smaller events such as our graduations, and she staffs our booth at tabling events. She also spoke on our behalf at our Tails to Tell presentations in past years.

Can Do Canines is so grateful and fortunate to have such a wonderful volunteer in Laurie Gillis. Thank you!
