For Gary, Willow Means Less Falling Down, More Getting Up

“After dealing with Parkinson's disease for 32 years and having a triple bypass in December, I realized I needed some help,” said Gary, who was recently teamed up with Mobility Assist Dog Willow, a gentle and smart yellow Labrador Retriever. He explained, “My biggest risk is in falling doing everyday tasks. I can do things, but it takes more time and can make me tired. I found I was sitting more and less involved in life.”

With Willow, things are looking up for Gary. “Willow helps me get out of a chair and makes me walk,” he said. Because his wife has been his primary care partner, Gary explained his reason for wanting a Can Do Canine. “I was hoping for a little assistance so I didn't have to always call my wife for help. Even help with little things...opening a drawer, picking up things I may drop and handing it to me, getting help for me, all would be great support.”

Willow did not disappoint when she began working with Gary, “She wowed us with how much she knew,” recalled Gary. He admits that it was no small feat to become versed in her skill set, and said, “The most fun was giving a cue and seeing her respond. Amazing!” Gary also recognizes the hard work and compassion provided by the Can Do Canines client service coordinators. He said, “We had an excellent trainer in Sarah. She was Willow's advocate and my support.”

Willow continues to amaze not only Gary, but others in his life as well. “Our friends are thrilled for me to have a service dog,” said Gary, “They've seen my disability progress and are hopeful for me. Everyone is respectful and aware of Willow and the protocol that goes with a service dog. Even my very young grandgirls know how to treat and behave with Willow.”

With his beloved mobility dog at his side, Gary already grasps the full extent of Willow’s loyalty, and said, “It's a very great feeling knowing this beautiful dog is here for me and I'm here for her. This whole experience has been a gift and Willow is a blessing!”
