Deborah Krinke and Diabetes Assist Dog Cayenne
By Kaity Padden
Deborah Krinke of Stillwater, Minnesota had become less aware of high and low blood glucose levels after 37 years with type 1 diabetes and feared that she was taking too much of a toll on her family’s life. Her husband would check on her throughout the night, and every once in a while a family member would come across her in need of assistance in treating a low. Recently, Deborah received medical equipment to help better manage her diabetes. Although these devices have helped her considerably, she still needed extra help. In came Cayenne.
Cayenne was matched with Deborah in November of 2017. She is able to sense the highs and lows in Deborah’s blood sugar and alert her so she can treat herself before she begins dropping below the normal level. With her new equipment and Cayenne’s help, Deborah has been able to avoid the most severe lows that she had experienced before.
Cayenne has restored comfort to Deborah’s life. Even in the middle of the night, Cayenne responds to Deborah’s levels. “She’s like my shadow. She is always there, and her nose is always on,” explains Deborah. This increased security has allowed Deborah to leave her house more often and for longer periods of time; she even feels more comfortable driving.
Her family also experiences the positive effects of Cayenne. “There is less stress for all of us,” Deborah says. “They are more comfortable going out and leaving me home alone, which is huge because they need to have a life too.” Deborah goes on to say that everyone is sleeping better and overall less worried about her because of the combination of her new devices and Cayenne.
When it comes to acknowledging the amount of time and people who helped raise, train, and get Cayenne to Deborah, she is speechless. “I can’t imagine what everyone went through to get her to be so smart,” Deborah says tearfully. “It’s amazing how orchestrated Can Do Canines is.”
Deborah feels so grateful that everything has fallen into place so perfectly. She says, “Cayenne just wants to make me and everyone around her happy. She just wants to do the right thing and she always does.”
