Make no bones about it, mealtime is often a favorite activity for dogs. With the right equipment, mealtime can be not only a hit with your dog, but it could bring other benefits, as well.
First of all, let’s dish about dishes. Both food and water bowls have varieties you might want to consider.
A slow-feeder food bowl* is great for dogs who gulp their food quickly, sometimes even causing themselves to be sick. These bowls that often look like they have a maze inside do, in a way, put the dog’s tongue in a maze to investigate all the curves and corners where food has landed. Some products advertise being able to slow a dog’s consumption by up to ten times.
For dogs that tend to get a little wet and wild with their water bowls, a no-spill water bowl might keep them from getting into hot water from sloshing and/or slobbering the liquid beyond the bowl. These items might come with a floating piece that only allows water to seep through a small opening in the center when the dog applies the normal pressure for taking a drink. Other ones have special sides that partly curve over the top.
You can bring your dog’s eating experiences to new heights with an elevated feeder. These allow the bowls to sit within a platform that is several inches off the ground (most are adjustable). The main benefit of raised bowls is improved comfort for the dog, as these feeders can reduce joint pain or neck strain while the dog is eating.
At our events, you may have seen what look like mini fleece tie blankets for sale. Assigned volunteers graciously make these aptly named snuffle mats*, as dogs need to snuffle through them for kibble hidden under the flaps. An activity like this not only keeps your dog from gobbling the food, but also provides mental stimulation so the dog may not get as bored throughout the day.
With a little Internet exploration, you’ll fetch plenty of ideas for other food puzzles* and feeding options that you might want to test the waters with for your furry friend.
