In recognizing the contributions that Jill Wisdorf has made to Can Do Canines over the past nine years, we might need to actually thank her son. Jill says, “Originally, I did not want to volunteer! In 2014, my son was a junior in high school and wanted to raise a puppy. I wanted new carpet! I didn't think the two went together. My son signed us up to attend a Tails to Tell presentation. Learning about Can Do Canines and the impact of the organization on both the clients and volunteers had my family and me hooked. We welcomed the first puppy into our home and we haven't looked back! The carpet had to wait.”
Her patience for carpet has benefitted several of our dogs in training. Jill remembers, “When we started volunteering, we knew nothing about raising or training a dog. At the time we had a 10-pound fluffy Shih Tzu. We were supported and gained confidence along the way.” Now, about 25 dogs later, Jill’s enthusiasm as a host has not wavered. “Welcoming different dogs into our home is a lot of fun. They all have unique personalities. Our family dog loves having different friends come to stay. It brings out the puppy in him even though he is 11!”
Jill did not stop at hosting. She has also helped with open houses, some community outreach events, Woofaroo, transportation, and more. Jill shares, “Anyone that knows me, knows I love a road trip. So I have fun driving to the different prisons either delivering a new batch of dogs to the inmates or bringing puppies back to [Can Do Canines] to become new members of volunteer families. I even met a few of the inmates when I drove to Faribault for the first time. It was wonderful to witness the love that they have for the dogs and hear them speaking proudly of the work they do. Mainly, I enjoy volunteering for Can Do Canines because I like being involved with an organization that helps people live their best lives through the independence they achieve through a uniquely trained service dog.”
Can Do Canines is grateful for Jill’s involvement. Volunteer Coordinator Christine Popp says, “Jill is a great listener and explainer. She helps at the Volunteer Table at Open Houses, and she does such a good job of telling people about what they can expect when hosting dogs in their homes and calming their anxieties about taking on this big, new volunteer job. Her kindness and patience make her such a delight to work with, no matter which volunteer role she is doing!”
When asked what she would like to impart to others considering this role, Jill says, “I would like people to understand that as a volunteer with [Can Do Canines], you are supported and appreciated in whatever you do. There are a lot of different ways to get involved. Anything you do is an important part of providing these amazing dogs to improve the quality of people's lives. You will meet new friends and may just find the quality of your life will be improved too!
Jill’s generous spirit has improved the quality of life for many dogs and humans, alike, through all she has done for Can Do Canines. We’re happy to roll out the red carpet for you, Jill!
