Treat-Dispensing Puzzle Toys
Puzzle toys are a great way to engage the dog when you are unable to directly interact, but can observe them. Make sure items are of a safe size and durability for the dog. You can either purchase a treat-dispensing puzzle toy or watch this video to see how to make your own.
Hide and Seek - With a Human
This is just like it sounds, with the dog being the seeker! Make it easy and obvious to start until they get the hang of it. If you are hiding, make sure to have cookies to reward their great search work!
If you have a young puppy, have someone hold them in place while you go hide. When ready, release the dog and ask, "Where's __?"
To challenge older dogs, try having them stay in a position, such as down or sit until released with "okay."
Hide and Seek - With Food
Cookie Search and Rescue
Set up larger boxes or plastic containers in a pile. Hide kibble underneath the objects. Tell the dog to “find it” and search through the pile. Use encouraging words if they are getting frustrated, such as “good dog” or “keep going."
You can also toss a cookie away with a “find it” to release them away to help them reset their brain.
Add high-value treats for extra fun!
Muffin tin
Put treats or the dog’s meal in the muffin tin and put small toys on top of the treats, such as tennis balls, balls, or Kongs.
The dog must knock off the toys to reach the cookie reward.
Obstacle Course
Create an obstacle course using household objects for the dog to walk over, walk
on, or go under!
Item ideas:
- Large folded up tarp
- Chairs for the dog to crawl under - drape a blanket over for a different experience!
- Cardboard box(s)
- Welcome mat or rug(s)
- Paper bag
