Jeanette is Making a Positive Impact in Various Ways

July 7, 2026

As an occupational therapist, Jeanette Gunderson says, “Increasing independence for people with disabilities has been my life's work.” With that vocation, volunteering for Can Do Canines seemed like a perfect fit. “I had seen service dogs and what they can do to increase independence.”

She and her husband started hosting dogs in 2015, beginning with Zest, who became a Mobility Assist Dog. They’ve done short-term and long-term hosting since then and are now a permanent home for career-changed Clive and retired Zinnia, after they served as her Breeder Host for three years.

However, as Jeanette explains, “I kept seeing opportunities to volunteer in different ways.” Can Do Canines has reaped the benefits of her “sight.” During the past four years, Jeanette has helped with dog outings, at special events, as a front desk receptionist, at outreach events, and more. She says, “I enjoy volunteering with the great people at Can Do Canine, who are devoted to the mission. I have learned so much about the care, training, and placement of service dogs. I am always learning something new!”

One of her favorite memories came when she attended an event a couple of years ago when a warden from one of our prison programs spoke. Jeanette knows the impact of that program benefits all involved and shares, “I see these dogs changing lives from the minute they are born. Everyone they touch is somehow impacted in a positive way.”

Jeanette is making a positive impact herself. Community Outreach Coordinator Laurie Carlson says, “In the many years Jeanette has volunteered, she's been a huge help with various events. She's always willing to jump in and help, whether it's at our open house, an information booth event, or one of our fundraisers.” Puppy Program Coordinator Lindsey Kromann adds, “Jeanette is an incredible asset to the Can Do Canines family. On top of her many years as a dedicated breeder host, she frequently steps up to welcome visitors at the front desk and happily fills in as a temporary host whenever needed. We are so incredibly lucky to have her as part of our team!”

Jeanette’s perspective is enough to nudge others toward service work. “Volunteering gives you an opportunity to give something special to people in your community, changing lives for good.” More specifically thinking about Can Do Canines, she adds, “Volunteering with the dogs softens your heart in a special way toward service animals and their work.”

We’re grateful for Jeanette’s soft heart and all she does!
