Training Tuesday – Host Request Flow

May 16, 2023

Many factors play a role in finding the best match for each dog and the speed at which it happens.

A host request can be received up to many months in advance (for this, we thank you!). We also have host requests that arrive at the last minute. We know that plans change and emergencies arise. But, because not every host can be found in advance, this complicates the process.

Once we receive a request, it is entered into a spreadsheet in order of start date. We try to focus our energy on the urgency of the request (next start date) and the location of the dog, and create our host opportunity emails based on the most time-sensitive needs.

The question often arises: "Why don't I see my dog's name on this list?" There are many variables that can affect this, but the biggest factor is that multiple dogs need to be matched with a host before your date. As limited volunteers are able to host, we need the available volunteers to host the most urgent dogs in need.

But rest assured! If you do not see your dog's name on our opportunity list, this does not mean we are not actively looking. We often reach out to volunteers even before we post.

Other things may affect the time in finding your dog a host or result in a dog not being immediately listed:

  1. Final Training dogs are using hosts while they get a "vacation" from training.
  2. Prisons are clearing out, and we are in need of Raisers for a large group of dogs.
  3. Puppies need Raisers.
  4. We have new dogs coming in to Can Do Canines that are in need of hosts.
  5. FETCH dogs are receiving a well-earned "vacation."
  6. We are looking for medical hosts for special needs and spay and neuters.

And the list goes on.

Once we find the best match for your dog based on availability, household situation, special needs, and then location, we let you know as soon as possible by connecting you with the host via email.

We never want you to be stressed or worried that we are not doing all we can to accommodate your request. You will never have to cancel a vacation because we cannot find a host. You deserve your time away, and we will always support you with our hosting process.

All the time and effort you give to each dog is appreciated!
