Phuong Le Uses Her Superpowers to Fill a Needed Role

May 1, 2025

You don’t need to have X-ray vision to realize the beneficial contribution that Phuong (Lê) Le makes to Can Do Canines.

woman wearing an X-ray-safe vest and facemask and holding a chickenSince December 2021, Lê has been “providing time, experience, and affiliation with Access Veterinary Care (who has generously allowed us to utilize their X-ray machine) to help get radiographic images for Can Do Canines’ dogs.” She first learned of our organization from a co-worker there who also volunteered for Can Do Canines at that time. She says, “One day she asked if I was possibly interested in helping her get X-rays on some of the dogs from Can Do Canines, to which I agreed and have been happily helping with ever since.”

Each of our dogs gets X-rays taken when they are about 12-14 months old, and as needed otherwise. This imaging is required for each dog to be placed with a client. Can Do Canines Veterinary Technician Hannah McCarthy says, “Lê has generously volunteered her time for years at our x-ray clinics, ensuring our dogs are structurally sound and ready to work. Her patience and love for the dogs mean so much to us, and we’re deeply grateful for all the time she’s dedicated to supporting our mission.”

Lê admits that performing this particular task with stressed and nervous dogs may not always be easy. However, she says, “It is a fundamental part of the program, and that alone makes the task worthwhile and meaningful to me.” She admits, “To be honest, what I enjoy most about volunteering with Can Do Canines is that it doesn’t require a large portion of my off time to help. With five troubling pets of my own, working a full-time job, and occasionally volunteering at two other organizations in addition to Can Do Canines, ‘extra time’ can be hard to come by.”

It’s easy to see that the extra time she gives us is making a difference, and she feels the effects herself. “It’s important to note that I find it truly inspiring when I am able to learn a little more about each dog’s personality, [and] witness their maturity, intelligence, and bravery in action, all at such a young age — that is the cherry on top for me when it comes to volunteering with Can Do Canines.”

We would gladly give her an ice cream sundae with its own cherry on top for this superhero job she offers us. Thanks, Lê!
