Whelping and Growth Center Manager Job Description

Overview

Become part of the Can Do Canines pack! Can Do Canines transforms people's lives by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. The dogs are provided to the client at no charge. The organization is supported primarily by donations from individuals, corporations, service clubs, and foundations.

Job Summary: Manage all aspects of Can Do Canines’ whelping facility
Classification: Exempt, Salaried
Salary: $52,000-58,000 annually, depending on experience
Hours Required: Full Time, including evening, weekend, and overnight hours

Relationships

Reports to: Director of Training
Positions Supervised: Canine Nursery Attendants, Volunteers
Frequent Interactions With: Volunteers, Puppy Program staff, Veterinary staff

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the on-site whelping of all Can Do Canines’ litters*
  • Provide appropriate care for all dogs at the whelping facility, including pregnant females, new mothers, and neonates*
  • Work with the Director of Training to make breeding timing decisions*
  • Work with vet tech staff and veterinarians to ensure proper medical care is given to mothers and neonates*
  • Work with vet tech staff to schedule progesterone testing, ultrasounds, and follow-up care for females that will be, or have been bred*
  • Manage a team of Canine Nursery Attendants, including shift scheduling for staff and volunteers, conducting annual reviews, hiring, and performance management*
  • Provide on-call services, telephone consults, and coverage when necessary*
  • Work with the team to recruit, onboard, train, develop, and support volunteers*
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Operations and Facilities Assistant to ensure facilities are maintained appropriately
  • Ensure proper data is collected and entered into the database
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • 5+ years experience in the whelping of dogs and care of neonates
  • 2+ years experience in the veterinary field, especially reproduction 
  • Knowledge of and experience with development and growth of dogs  
  • A valid driver’s license and insurability are required

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s Degree or higher, in related field.

Experience

  • Experience in program coordination, and working with volunteers
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • Knowledge of Assistance Dog International (ADI) regulations
