Veterinarian Technician Job Description

Overview

Become part of the Can Do Canines pack! Can Do Canines is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. The dogs are provided to the client at no charge. The organization is supported primarily by donations from individuals, corporations, service clubs, and foundations. We receive no government funding.

Job Summary: Performs actions to provide support to puppy program volunteers, clients and graduates to carry out the mission of the organization
Salary: Non-Exempt, Hourly ($19-$21/hour DOE); Eligible for Health and Dental Insurance, 403(b), Paid Time Off (PTO)
Hours Required: Minimum 40 Hours per week, including weekend and evening hours

Relationships

Reports to: Director of Training
Person(s) Making Work Assignments: Director of Training, Training Manager
Positions Supervised: N/A
Frequent Interactions With: Prison Program Manager, Breeding Coordinator, Staff Veterinarian

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide in-house support regarding medical issues or concerns as well as routine vaccinations and medical testing, including x-rays, to program dogs as needed.*
  2. Maintain and update dog records to ensure proper documentation is kept on all dogs in the program.*
  3. Maintain medical records of dogs in the puppy program and in the breeding program.*
  4. Assist volunteers and clients with medical concerns regarding Can Do Canines dogs.*
  5. Organize and schedule program dogs’ health clearance appointments for spays/neuters, x-rays and eye appointments.*
  6. Order medical supplies needed for the care of program dogs.*
  7. Maintain medical inventory and supplies for the puppy program.*
  8. Prepares documentation for exchanges with other assistance dog organizations, including international.
  9. Communicates with veterinary and correctional partners.
  10. Other duties as assigned.*Denotes essential functions of this position

Required Qualifications

Experience

A veterinary technician background with substantial experience working as a vet tech and experience in dog obedience training and dog behavior. This position requires the use of a telephone and computer to perform work, the ability to work without close supervision, and experience and ease in communicating with individuals on a one-to-one basis.

Experience in working with animal rescue organizations and client relations, and knowledge of Assistance Dog International (ADI) regulations, are preferred.

Education

Associate’s degree and five or more years of related experience, Bachelor’s degree and or three or more years of related work experience, or ten or more years of experience, or reasonable variation of the above.
