Facilities Maintenance Assistant (P/T) Job Description

Overview

Become part of the Can Do Canines pack! Can Do Canines transforms lives by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs. The dogs are provided to the client at no charge. The organization is supported primarily by donations from individuals, corporations, service clubs, and foundations.

Job Summary: Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the dog training facility in New Hope and kennel in New Germany. This includes ensuring the facilities, vehicles, and grounds are clean and in good running order.  The assistant will oversee vendors and volunteers who maintain the grounds, clean and maintain vehicles, procure building supplies, and be on call to help with unexpected building system problems. The position also is a back-up to the kennel staff who take care of 30-40 on-site dogs in training.
Classification: Non-Exempt, Part-Time, 15-22 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work hours are somewhat flexible, but at least four hours per week must be between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. No work is allowed after 10 p.m., and the work schedule should be similar from week to week.
Salary: $15 to $22 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Reports to: Director of Finance and Operations
Positions Supervised: Volunteers
Frequent Interactions With: Kennel Staff, Training Staff, Volunteers

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • *Manages the maintenance and upkeep of our 15,000-square-foot facility and grounds in New Hope including:
    • Grounds and parking lot upkeep, including managing vendor services and addressing items done by vendors
    • External building maintenance including caulking, cleaning, and minor painting
    • HVAC management including filter replacement and addressing repairs and maintenance
    • Monitor and maintain other building systems (plumbing, electrical, security, fire alarm)
    • Ensure all areas of the facility are being cleaned by contracted services, including a client apartment
  • *Manages the maintenance and upkeep of a kennel in New Germany including:
    • Making periodic trips to the facility to address maintenance and repair tasks
    • Managing the grounds and lawn/plowing service
    • Transporting and/or procuring some supplies for the facility
    • Monitor and maintain other building systems (furnace, AC, plumbing, electrical, security, fire alarm)
    • External building maintenance (caulking, cleaning, etc)
  • *Other duties include:
    • Cleaning and overseeing the maintenance of a fleet of six vehicles
    • Helping with the setup for events (roughly once per month)
    • Addressing pest control measures
    • Helping the kennel staff with tasks and occasionally covering shifts if needed
    • Periodic painting
    • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience in building maintenance including experience working with HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems
  • Experience with vehicle maintenance and care
  • Experience overseeing grounds care vendors and the ability to conduct grounds care tasks including mowing, trimming, snow blowing and shoveling
  • Proven record of tracking and completing maintenance and repair tasks
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds on a regular basis, ability to access roof of building without assistance. 
  • A valid driver’s license and insurability are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High level of motivation and initiative
  • Familiarity with dog care practices and or a dog facility
  • Ability to do minor repairs to HVAC, electrical equipment, plumbing fixtures
  • Ability to work well with others and follow up with tasks
  • Flexibility to respond to building emergencies quickly
